New SUP the Mag

I was beyond stoked to see this image in the latest SUP the Magazine.  The photo was taken by John Webster in Stanley, Idaho on the Salmon River..  It was always a dream to paddle in the Sawtooths in the winter.  Live your dreams.

Fall Stand Up Journal

It’s always a good day when the new Stand Up Journal arrives at the Post Office.  The fall issue celebrates SUP 10th Annaversary as a sport.  There are great articles about the history and people that made our sport.  All the hero are in there Gerry Lopez, Laird, Kia and many others.  To my surprise on the last page Editors Note is a picture of Nesta and I! It is such honor to be in such a great publication.  This makes the 3rd time we have appeared in the Stand Up Journal!  All the images were taken by Ray Gadd.

Summer of SUP~Lake Erie Sunset SUP

Last month, I was visiting family in Ohio and was lucky enough to get a sweet sunset sup session with my nephew Jack. It was really fun teaching him proper paddle technique and sup safety.   Living in the mountains I miss the full horizon sunsets. Special thanks to Vito at West River Water sports for the Bic SUP’s.  Enjoy these images from Vermilion, Ohio.

Summer of SUP~Idahome

Favorite New River SUP Gear for 2016

It has been a great river sup season here in Central Idaho.  The deep winter provided us with great river flows. As our sport keeps progressing and evolving each season so does our gear.  Here is a list of my favorite River SUP Gear this season.

Bic River SUP  ~9’2 inflatable is 36 inches wide and 6 inche thick.  This is a super stable board when blown up to 15 psi. It has a rigid feel that early inflatables lacked.  The moulded quad fin works great for keep your line and is perfect when running shallow sections.  The rocker tip drives through rapids and helps keep tip from diving. Another excellent feature are all the straps for pulling yourself back up or lashing gear.

Astral Green Jacket and Hiyak Shoe~  The Green Jacket is an award winning PFD.  This is a super comfy life jacket. It is a rescue pfd which allows you to release the belt to free yourself from your leash.  This was well thought out with all the features you need but not overkill.  The Hilak has a super sticky rubber sole which gives you traction even on slippery rocks..  I like the support the high top offer when travelling over rocky terrain.  I’ve loved all my different Astrals for SUP

Patagonia R3 Wetsuit from Wetsuit Warehouse~  The R3 is a 4.5/ 3.4mm which means my chilly days are over.  This is my ideal suit for river sup and Pacific Northwest surf trips. Made with anatomical patterning and high-quality neoprene that meets Patagonia’s rigorous standards for stretch and durability.  The torso and thighs are lined with midweight chlorine-free merino wool; hydrophobic recycled polyester micro-grid thermal lining in the arms, legs and hood dries fast, minimizes weight and offers excellent flex. The floating front-zip provides ease of entry and maximizes freedom of movement through the shoulders and chest. 100% external seam sealing eliminates leaks. Other features include a durable, water-resistant recycled polyester outer lining, hidden key loop and long-lasting Supratex kneepads. All seams are triple glued, blindstitched and internally taped at high stress areas. is your one stop shop for all your wetsuit needs and accessories.

patagonia-mens-r3-88417_lrg_207x465G-Form pads~   I recommend pads to anyone considering whitewater sup.  I’ve been using the knee and shine pads for years.  They fit fairly tight yet, you don’t notice any restriction of movement.  They do not get weighed down by the water and dry quickly.  You can also use these pads for mountain biking!

SUP action this month!

Summer vibes and the living is good!  The Bid Wood River is still delivering!  Last week it hit its peak at 2200 cfs.  Of course I had to do a lap after work.

Enjoy these images of the waterlife…mountain style.

Big Wood River SUP

Big Wood River SUP from Danny Irie Walton on Vimeo.

SUP Season is here!!!  It has been a really fun enjoying the spring run off on the Big Wood River.  I can put in down the street from my house and get a 8 mile run. This season we have even gone to Hailey a few times. The great ski season has set up for a great sup season.  The Big Wood is a really beautiful river that few people float due to its shallowness.  The best part has been sharing time on the river with old and new friends.

Standup Journal Photo Annual
