Crucial Gear for Snopocalypse

GaddRay_BaldyPow_O4A2152

The past six weeks have a dream for all shredders in Sun Valley.  I am blessed to work the best business and was prepared for all conditions.  From outerwear to powder skis to avalanche safety I was prepared.  Here are my from favorites from Mammut, RMU and Julbo.

2710-00030-1012Mammut Pulse Beacon

Batteries are cheap.  We always wear our beacon on storm days at the resort.  Guess I am just a safety guy.  And No I don’t wear it at the bar.

Mammut Arctic Mittin

Not only did we get lots of snow but we experienced arctic  temps.  Usually, these are too hot to ski in but with temps hovering below zero they were perfect.  You don’t want to miss out on blower cold smoke because you’re cold.  These are also essential for any overnight in the snow.

2610-01330-0001The Protection Airbag System 3.0 is an avalanche airbag system with a 3D-shaped brightly-colored airbag that deploys protectively around the wearer’s head, neck and chest area when activated. The airbag can therefore also provide protection from mechanical injuries. The new system is safe, easy to use, even lighter and smaller than before.  This pack is super comfy.  I have over 40 days on it this season and it is an awesome design.

Mammut Alvier Jacket

The Alvier is not only weather-resistant; it is also comfortable. The outer material is stretchy and follows your every move. And thanks to the underarm ventilation you won’t break a sweat, even on the steepest of lines. The Alvier also offers little practical goodies, including an internal pocket with a multimedia outlet, a small wrist compartment for your ski pass and proven Lycra hand gaiters.

Julbo Aerospace Goggle

New this year for me is joining the Julbo team and I couldn’t be happier.  I am seeing things in a new light and never clearer reguardless of the conditions. The first goggle you can wear whether you’re on the skin track, lift, or flying down the mountain! Julbo developers designed a proprietary “SuperFlow” System that enables you to pull the full lens forward from the frame for maximum ventilation. Add in the very best Julbo NXT lens and Minimalist frame design and you have the ultimate goggle for all conditions. #onelensisallyouneed These bad boys feature Photochromic lens (cat 2 to 3 – VLT 30% to 15%) with high contrast orange tint and glare control filter for optimum visual comfort even under flat light.

RMU Professor Ski

Destined for the deep, the Professor charges the untracked.  Float and a commanding yet playful flex allow the Professor to turn any powder day into an artistic session. Heavy rocker in the tip and tail allow the ski to pivot and surf through powder, while camber under foot and the five point sidecut allow the ski to hold an effective edge when you are carving from one powder stash to the next. A deceptive maneuverability and a ski for chargers. I also love the demensions 144-150-122-134-123!

January to Remember

WOW!  What a way to start the new year.  The Sun Valley area was blessed with between 4-8 feet of snow.  The storm came in wet and added to a already deep base.  Then the temps went frigid to make the powder blower Idaho cold smoke.  These are the best conditions I’ve ever had at Sun Valley.  Lines I’ve looked at for ages were finally checked off.  And yes, they were as good as I dreamed they would be.  Enjoy these images by Jon Mancuso and Ray Gadd.

Winter 2016-17 is here!

JM161210-4

Yes, the high holy season is upon us. Sun Valley was blessed with its first big dump and things are setting up for a great holiday season.  This marks my 19th season at Sun Valley.  Pretty crazy that I only came for one season but never left.  I was instantly hooked.  I am still hooked.  Life has pretty much revolved around skiing.  My wife and I’s first date was skiing. I have made life time friendships with a collection of great characters.  Here’s to another great season of skiing pow with family and friends.

World Telemark Day 2016

I am proud to be a freeheel skier.  I love the feeling I get when I drop into a telemark turn.  There is nothing like carving and surfing down the blank canvas.  Todays equipment has come along way from the my old leather days.  Enjoy the latest episode of Ida-pow4.
